***Rabies Alert*** Mercer County Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies

 

Location – Valley Road, Mercer, Jefferson Township, Mercer County

 

Summary –A women saw her three dogs fighting with a raccoon on her back porch.  She reached down to break up the fight and the raccoon bit her on the thumb.  The dogs killed the raccoon and it was submitted to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory where it tested positive for rabies.

 

Exposure –Two of the dogs exposed to the raccoon were currently vaccinated.  These dogs were given a rabies booster and will be quarantined for 90 days.   The third dog exposed to the raccoon was not currently vaccinated.  It will be vaccinated and quarantined for 180 days. One person was exposed to the raccoon and will receive post exposure treatment.

 

Rabies Law – Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
