***Rabies Alert*** Mercer County Horse Tests Positive for Rabies
Location –Lyons Road, Jackson Center, Lake Township, Mercer County
Summary –A miniature horse was examined by a veterinarian for hind limb paralysis. The horse did not respond to treatment and the paralysis progressed to the forelimbs. The horse had no history of rabies vaccinations. The horse was euthanized and submitted to the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory where it tested positive for rabies.
Exposure –Four humans were exposed to the horse and are receiving post exposure prophylaxis. No domestic animals were exposed.
Rabies Law – Pennsylvania law requires all dogs and non-feral cats three months of age and older to be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. Failure to comply with the law may result in a fine of up to $300.
